POOL
FENCING CHECKLIST
This
is a general checklist to help you make your pool safe. It does not
cover every situation. If your pool does not comply, whether you are
the owner, occupier or tenant of the property, under the Fencing of
Swimming Pools Act 1987, the pool must be empty until it does comply.
IMMEDIATE
POOL AREA:
Should
not contain any of the following:
- Washing
line.
- Play
area and equipment.
- Garage,
carport or vehicle access.
- Vegetable
garden.
- The
whole back yard.
HINGED
DOORS GIVING ACCESS TO POOL AREA:
- Closes
and latches automatically.
- Latch
/ handle a minimum of 1500 mm from the bottom of the door.
- Stickers
displayed (available from Auckland City Council).
- No
hold open devices.
SLIDING
DOORS / BIFOLDS GIVING ACCESS TO POOL AREA:
- Latch,
lower bolt, security lock at a minimum of 1.5 m from the door.
- Stickers
displayed (available from Auckland City Council).
WINDOWS
GIVING ACCESS TO POOL AREA CLOSER THAN 1.2m FROM THE FLOOR:
- Should
be fitted with a limit to prevent them opening more than 100 mm.
FENCE:
- 1.2
m high from outside ground level or any permanent projection within
1.2 m.
- 900
mm between horizontal rails.
- Gaps
under fence less than 100 mm.
- Mesh
size no more than 13 mm - fence must be at least 1.2 m high.
- Mesh
size no more than 50 mm - fence must be at least 1.8 m high.
- Picket
fence gaps no wider than 100 mm.
- No
climb points on outside of fence, e.g. seating, trees.
GATES:
- Latch
on outside of gate to be 1.5 m high.
- Latch
on pool side of gate to be 1.2 m high..
- To
open away from pool.
- To
be self closing and self latching.
PARA
TYPE POOLS:
- Sides
to be 1.2 m high minimum from ground level.
- Smooth
vertical sides.
- No
climb points.
- Ladder
to be removable.
SPA
POOLS :
- Must
have either a complying fence or Council approved childproof lockable
cover.
- Stickers
displayed (available from Auckland City Council).
